As for bio-deisel... it's already on the market, just not enough to make a dent. The problem is that currently it requires more energy to create bio-deisel than you get out of it. Plus... only a small fraction of cars on the road run on deisel, and not all of them can take alternative fuels.

From what i saw, you can convert it with a hundred dollar service to run in a regular gas engine....well that is what the article said, i want to know how. But that is interesting too, i heard just about the opposite that it is easier to make from corn...i am not claiming to be an expert but just something that caught my interest a little while ago....

Aso for the ANWAR reserves....think about it like this it may take ten years, but he started to try to get it almost 6 yrs ago now..

..part of the problem is that we dont have the same amount of refinerys as before. I personally am waiting for fuel cells, that pipedream of a technology will free america and western europe off of middle eastern oil...

NZ$ 1.53 91 octane per Litre
NZ$ 1.58 96 octane per Litre

1 litre = 0.264172051 US gallon
1.00 NZD = 0.695156 USD

so... (mmmm.. maths)

NZ$ 5.79 per gallon 91
NZ$ 5.98 per gallon 96

US$ 4.02 per gallon 91
US$ 4.15 per gallon 96

not quite the same since we generally use jap imported cars, much lower fuel req's than most american cars.

NZ being New Zealand (thankfully don't have to say that often: LoTR )

Open car door reach down get the paper close door drive forward and park again in garage.. hit garage door remote to close garage door. Promptly get out of car, walk to gas powered generator and pull start it to power my house Valla Livin Nice!!

All done at 0.12 cents a gallon for gas.

All of this would be solved if the government forced the oil companies in the US to build more refineries. There definitely is and will continue to be a price hike due to the hurricane because of all the lost production and lost product in Louisianna.

Oh, and we don't get most of our oil from Iraq or the Middle East. We get most of our oil from Mexico and a country in South America, which I think is Venezuela. The price hike is due to the hurricane and too few refineries in the US, not the "war" in Iraq.

After hearing about this, my concern is what the hell is the government going to do for the airlines? Price hike -> Price raise on Jet fuel -> Higher ticket costs for passengers -> Less flyers -> Jobs lost and wages cut = Government bail out?

Personaly I just think this is a good push towards using other damn forms of energy. This would be possible... BUT WHERE THE HELL ARE ALL THE ELECTRIC AND HYDRO CARS!!! (Stops imiating Lewis Black).

Look, I saw this car commercial and they said they HAD a hydro car and that it WORKED. I don't CARE if it's a concept car, if the car WORKS it WORKS. Put it out on the market! I can guarentee you, people would buy the car because they'd rather throw their garden hose in the car rather than stop at a gas station.

If these prices are gonna rise, I atleast want another option besides getting off my fat ass and going on a bike, alright? Make it easier to get those electric cars, and make them actualy affordable. And why not ADVERTISE for them?! People WILL buy them because of these gas prices.

from what i recall about 10% of US oil comes from the persian gulf, with over 50% being imported. It is not that America is super reliant on that 10%, but its loss does create an impact.

The problem with the government forcing anyone is that they are also the ones who set the standards for how they are built. 170 oil refineries in the US and the number is dropping...why is that? Some point to similar shifts in policy like in California where it now takes 5+ yrs to build a powerplant from first design due to all the environmental regs.

AU$1.30 per Litre at the moment here in Western Australia.

So that's about US$3.70 a gallon over here in Australia.

The price of petrol in Australia has just about doubled over the past 5 years or so. Used to be able to get fuel at $0.60 per litre when I first started driving...

I was in Venezuela last week, and gas was Bs. 100 per litter. That's about $0.05 so roughly 1 galon is $0.20.

Now I'm back in US, thank god I don't have a car to feed.

$2.99 NE Mass. And that's the cheapest around. Pirces vary from $2.99-3.09.

Alas, we are like 20 years from hydrogen being a viable thing. Not only do you have to perfect the cars, but you have to build the delivery infrastructure as well. And hydrogen is not a fuel source either.

And what's up with Germany bashing us? Hasn't that guy figured out by now ANYTHING that happens that threatens an oil supply or interrupts the process makes prices of crude go up. He's an economic minister for crying out loud lol.

I know for sure that at least TWO offshore drilling rigs were either demolished or torn loose from their moorings as a result of Katrina. That will definitely impact the price per barrel of crude. In addition, other rigs may have damage severe enough to keep them from full pumping capacity for weeks. Be prepared to pay more at the pump folks. It can't be helped.

Just made this post in the KARMA forums, since someone was talking about this there too.

In the UK.
Gas (petrol here) is 93 pence/litre at the local pump.
1 US gallon = 3.785 litres
so 93 pence/litre * 3.785 litres/US gallon = 352 pence/ US gallon or £3.52/ gallon
£1.00 = $1.80708
£3.52 * $1.80708/£ = $6.36

So for us it's $6.36 per gallon for gas. It was like in the mid 80s pence per litre last year and low 80s the year before IIRC. We have been dealing with these ridiculous prices for a while now. There was even a strike from all the lorry drivers (they use diesel) a couple of years back because such high prices impact their livelihood. IIRC the taxes on the fuel amount to about 53 pence/litre - yep more than half o_0

I have a theory - no matter what happens to supply of oil, gets more or less, it's an excuse for the gas companies to raise the prices. They were doing it before hurricance Katrina too so they are just using that disaster as another excuse.

I think people drive a lot more in the states. Over here the average mileage for a family car per year is 10,000 miles. I remember someone saying in the US it is 15,000 miles per year or more, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, prices are hitting $3.00/gallon in NJ too. Luckily I can go about two weeks on a tank of gas since my job is only 7 miles away. I can also bike to work if things get worse.

I laugh a little every time I see a huge SUV though (Hummer, Tahoe, Excursion, Denali, whatever). I just imagine these suckers paying $75 to fill up their tanks, and I can't help but think they deserve it.

Right about now I'm glad I've got my little 1.9L Saturn.....

The stations here are over $3/gallon, but none of them have gas. I'd like to personally thank all of the idiot SUV and truck drivers around here who just had to save a measly $0.30/gallon and fill up their entire tank yesterday. Thanks for creating a frenzy and leaving no gas for the rest of us.
